[Congrats Lizzie, you're the first person Wan has ever called over the phone. As such, you get a lot of microphone static as he fumbles between putting it to his ear, then pull it away to speak, then put it back to listen in. He has not quite got the hang of just holding it in one place yet.
But, in his defense, he'd never seen a cell phone before two days ago.]
Hello? Lizzie? Are you there? Hello? I wanted to tell you I found a garden.
[A pause to listen.]
If you can hear me, you should know we'll be able to start our own garden in a couple days. I just have to harvest some clippings from the other one I found. The woman tending it said we could.
[Lizzie, on the other hand, is an old pro at cell phones. She'd never had one of her own before, but her parents each had, and she'd used both of theirs before everything went to hell.]
[A soft intake of excited breath could be heard from Wan before he respond with a clearly energetic tone, though his words were hushed like he was trying to keep his voice from being too loud.]
A tea garden! There's not a large variety, but they have enough for five or six different plants we can make teas from. If we can find space for them and they take to the new soil. We might not be able to grow sunflowers. Those are really big.
The garden I found is already growing some, so we should be able to get some other plant clippings. It will have to be separate from the tea garden. And it will probably have to be small for a while, but yeah. We can grow food.
Lizzie? Are you okay? Have you been staying inside? Please stay inside if you can. Until the fog is gone. Please... call me back. Tell me if you're okay.
[Lizzie sounds a little shaky, but relieved. Despite all her talk about wanting to be brave, she's spent 99.9% of all of this hiding out in her room. Being strong is so much harder when you're in a still-new place (that you were kidnapped to, no less) without any of your friends and family around. But hearing from Wan-- one of her new friends-- makes her feel just a little bit better.]
I think... it's going away. Starting to, anyway. I haven't gone outside in a long time.
I've already been outside. I was helping get rid of the fog. The hardest part is over with.
[Especially now that his hands and other injuries had been healed by Katara. Knowing that those powers worked again gave him confidence.]
It's still not completely safe, but I can protect myself. At least long enough to bring you something to eat. I have a couple cans that have pictures of diced fruit on them. It looks like it should taste pretty good.
[Wan hung up and headed out immediately. He only had the two cans, but it would help Lizzie and she wouldn't have to go out for at least three more days just to try and find enough food.
He got there quickly, having run over, and knocked on the doorframe.]
[Wan was actually wearing his summer clothes this time - they were sleeveless and his scarf was no where in sight. It left him a little chilled, but it was better than wearing his now bloodied winter clothes that he was going to have to patch over the bullet hole. This way, he looked like nothing had ever been wrong. Clean, too.]
I'm fine. See. All good.
[Wan said as he entered her building, slipping his lovely, and colorful, plastic backpack off.]
[Wan glanced down at his bag, not understanding how anyone couldn't love it. It was so colorful! And it had roses! And a rainbow! And clouds! And a butterfly!
Of course, he didn't know it was a Lisa Frank thing because writing disappeared in Haven West and he didn't read English anyway. But he liked the bag.]
What's Lisa Frank stuff? Why wouldn't boys like it?
[And what did it have to do with liking his backpack?]
That backpack is Lisa Frank; it's a company. It's made for girls, but it's okay for boys to like it if they want to. I like some things that some people say are for boys-- like the books about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.
[Now she's mentally going back to something he said earlier, though.]
